From Now to Next: The 3 Sticky Floors Keeping You Stuck

Say it out loud. The reason you give yourself for why you have not gone after the thing you actually want. I bet it sounds completely reasonable. This is the episode that started this whole show, recorded in April 2022 under a different name, and it is where I first said the thing that became my entire body of work. It is usually not the glass ceiling holding you back. It is your own sticky floor.

Back then the show was called From Now to Next. I was a wife, a mom of two, a Chief People Officer, an entrepreneur, and a fitness fanatic, and in my line of work I watched the same thing happen to woman after woman. Smart, capable, driven women who were stuck. Not because someone above them slammed a door, but because of what they were standing in. And I want to be clear about something I said in this trailer and still mean every word of. This is not just conjecture. This is my story. I may be living my best life now, but it was not always that way.

So what is a sticky floor? It is the belief or the behavior you built yourself that keeps you in place, long before any ceiling ever gets the chance to stop you. In this episode I name three kinds. Limiting beliefs, the ones that sound like no one is going to pay me that much money to do this job, or I do not have the right qualifications, or I am not tall enough, thin enough, pretty enough. Toxic and self sabotaging behaviors, and yes, I said hello wine Wednesdays out loud. And deadbeat relationships that no longer serve you and keep you from living your best life.

That qualifications one has a receipt. An internal review at Hewlett-Packard found that men apply for a job when they meet about 60% of the qualifications, while women wait until they meet 100% of them. Tara Sophia Mohr later wrote about that finding in Harvard Business Review, and here is the part that gets me. When she surveyed hundreds of professionals about why they did not apply, hardly any of them said they doubted they could do the job. The most common answer was that they did not think they would get hired, so why waste the effort. That is a sticky floor talking, and it sounds so practical you would never think to argue with it.

I am not asking you to pretend the ceiling is not real. It is. LeanIn.Org and McKinsey's Women in the Workplace 2025 study found that for every 100 men promoted to manager, only 93 women are promoted, and just 60 Black women. That is a structure, and structures take all of us to move. But the floor is the part you can get your hands on this week. Every episode of this show since this one has been a woman who did exactly that, who got out of her own way, cleaned up her sticky floor, and told the truth about the mistakes she made getting there. If you are ready to go from your now to your next, start here.

TRANSCRIPT:

Erica: Hey, girl. By now, you know I have HER Collective, my online community for ambitious women who are done doing it alone. HER Collective is for the women who are smart, capable, and driven, but they find themselves stuck on the sticky floors like self doubt, burnout, and waiting for permission that quite honestly never comes. Inside HER, you get more than motivation. You get real support, real strategies, and real momentum.

Erica: We work on things like clarifying what you want now and what's coming next, building confidence without burning yourself out, handling hard conversations, career moves, and leadership moments with clarity, and surrounding yourself with women who actually get it. This isn't about hustling harder. It's about moving intentionally with the right tools and the right people in your corner. If you're ready to stop spinning, start choosing yourself, and build a career and life that actually feels aligned, I'd love to welcome you inside HER Collective. You can learn more and join us at www.joinhercollective.com.

Erica: Because honestly, girl, you were never meant to do this alone. I'm Erica Rooney, wife, mom of two, chief people officer, entrepreneur, and fitness fanatic. And I'm on a mission to help every woman I meet be empowered, be a boss, and be living the dream. But let me tell you, a problem that I see time and time again is that it is not always a glass ceiling that holds us back, but really, it's our own sticky floors.

Erica: These sticky floors could be limiting beliefs such as no one's gonna pay me that much money to do this job, or I don't have the right qualifications, even I'm not tall enough, thin enough, pretty enough. It could be toxic and self sabotaging behaviors, hello wine Wednesdays, or even deadbeat relationships that no longer serve us and keep us from living our best life. In this podcast, I'll be speaking with fellow ambitious, successful, and badass women who've gotten out of their own way, cleaned up their sticky floor, and are doing the damn thing. Women just like you, who've decided that they have had enough, will share our stories of how we did it, the mistakes that we made along the way, and the pivotal moment that changed everything. This isn't just conjecture.

Erica: This is my story. I may be living my best life now, but it was not always that way. And when I decided to confront my own sticky floors, I realized I had the power to change anything and that success was limitless. If you wanna level up, you're in the right place. Listen in and learn how to go from your now to your next.

What was the From Now to Next podcast?

From Now to Next was the original name of Erica Rooney's podcast when it launched in April 2022, and this trailer is the very first episode in the feed. The show was later renamed Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors, but the premise never changed. It is about the internal barriers that keep ambitious women stuck, and the women who have cleared them.

What is a sticky floor?

A sticky floor is the limiting belief or the toxic behavior you built yourself that keeps you stuck in place, long before any glass ceiling gets the chance to stop you. Erica Rooney names three kinds in this episode: limiting beliefs, toxic and self sabotaging behaviors, and relationships that no longer serve you. The ceiling is above you. The floor is the part you can get your hands on.

What are examples of sticky floors that hold women back at work?

The ones Erica names in this episode are beliefs like no one is going to pay me that much money to do this job, I don't have the right qualifications, and I'm not tall enough, thin enough, pretty enough. She also names toxic and self sabotaging behaviors, including wine Wednesdays, and deadbeat relationships you have outgrown. Research backs the qualifications one. An internal Hewlett-Packard review found men apply when they meet 60% of the requirements while women wait until they meet 100%.

Hi, I'm Erica!

In the last 15 years, I climbed to Chief People Officer, 6x'd my income, walked away from a culture that stopped matching my values, wrote two books, and built HER Collective to help thousands of women rise to power and lead in the age of AI. I've learned a thing or two about smashing ceilings and closing gaps, and Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors is where I open the playbook, the receipts, and the real stories to share it all with you.
