The Sticky Floors Holding Women Back at Work (And How to Break Free)
Look at every rule you have been handed at work. Lean in, but not too far. Speak up, but not too loudly. Be assertive, but never bossy. Work like you do not have kids, then be a mom like you do not have a job. Erica Anderson Rooney spent over fifteen years in corporate HR and gender equality work, and she has heard every one of these unspoken rules firsthand, from both sides of the table.
Erica's own story is not a straight line to the top. She built a career as a C level executive while quietly carrying imposter syndrome, a brand of perfectionism that demanded the impossible, and a dependence on alcohol that nearly cost her marriage, her family, and the career she had worked so hard to build. She got sober, rebuilt her confidence from the inside out, and turned what she learned into a framework she now teaches other women.
That framework starts with naming two different problems. The glass ceiling is the barrier other people put in front of you. The sticky floor is the one you put under your own feet, the self doubt, the burnout, the waiting for permission that never comes. Erica is not alone in seeing how deep that self doubt runs. A KPMG survey of 750 female executives found that 75% had experienced imposter syndrome at some point in their careers, and 85% said they believe it is common among women in corporate America.
The barriers are not only internal either. McKinsey and LeanIn's 2025 Women in the Workplace report found that only 93 women are promoted to manager for every 100 men, a gap that widens to 74 women of color for every 100 men. Every week on Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors, Erica breaks down exactly how to name these barriers, work around the ones you cannot control, and dismantle the ones you can. This is the show for the woman who is done doing it alone and ready to build a career that actually feels like hers.
TRANSCRIPT:
Erica: Hey, girl. By now, you know I have Her Collective, my online community for ambitious women who are done doing it alone. Her Collective is for the women who are smart, capable, and driven, but they find themselves stuck on the sticky floors like self doubt, burnout, and waiting for permission that quite honestly never comes. Inside HER, you get more than motivation. You get real support, real strategies, and real momentum.
Erica: We work on things like clarifying what you want now and what's coming next, building confidence without burning yourself out, navigating hard conversations, career moves, and leadership moments with clarity, and surrounding yourself with women who actually get it. This is not about hustling harder. It's about moving intentionally with the right tools and the right people in your corner. If you're ready to stop spinning, start choosing yourself, and build a career in life that actually feels aligned, I'd love to welcome you inside her collective. Erica: Because honestly, girl, you were never meant to do this alone. Have you ever felt held back by doubts, fears, and societal expectations? Do you struggle with self limiting beliefs that undermine your potential? Picture this. Despite having all the qualifications and expertise, you find yourself stuck, unable to climb the ladder of success just because of unspoken rules and invisible barriers.
Erica: Here's the deal. As women, we are told to lean in but not too far, to speak up but not too loudly, to be assertive but not too much because then you're bossy. We're told to work like we don't have kids and be a mom like we don't have a job. And y'all, we are tired. We are stuck.
Erica: But what if I told you that you could shatter those barriers? What if you could overcome those beliefs and not just reach, but surpass your wildest dreams. My name is Erica Anderson Rooney, and this is the Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floor podcast. I'm a keynote speaker, author, and a c level executive, and I have spent over fifteen years specializing in human resources and gender equality. I used to be constrained by my own limiting beliefs and toxic behaviors.
Erica: I struggled with imposter syndrome, perfectionism that demanded the impossible, and an attachment to booze that almost cost me everything. My family, my marriage, my career, everything I'd worked so hard for. But now I'm leading the way in empowering women, and my goal is to help you do the same. You see, what I've learned is that breaking free requires more than just hard work.
Erica: It requires a profound shift in how we perceive our own abilities and how we navigate not just the professional spaces, but the world. After overcoming these challenges myself and helping others do the same for years, I've made it my mission to help you achieve breakthroughs in your personal and professional lives. On this podcast, every week, we will be sharing insights from leading professionals, personal success stories, and actionable strategies through interviews and solo episodes. By tuning in, you'll learn how to identify and overcome your own sticky floors, those limiting beliefs and toxic behaviors. You'll develop resilience and assertiveness so that ultimately you can unlock new career heights, gain recognition, and achieve your professional aspirations.
Erica: Some episodes are going to be solo episodes where I walk you through specific frameworks or teach you a certain lesson. Other times, we're gonna feature guests who have also shattered their glass ceilings so that they can share with you exactly how they did it. So if you're an ambitious woman looking to navigate and overcome the complexities of today's world, go ahead and subscribe to the Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floor podcast wherever you get your podcasts. And pretty soon, you will be well on your way to smashing through any ceiling and any goal and any height that you've always aimed for.

Hi, I'm Erica!
In the last 15 years, I climbed to Chief People Officer, 6x'd my income, walked away from a culture that stopped matching my values, wrote two books, and built HER Collective to help thousands of women rise to power and lead in the age of AI. I've learned a thing or two about smashing ceilings and closing gaps, and Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors is where I open the playbook, the receipts, and the real stories to share it all with you.
