Three Steps to Goals That Actually Stick: BHAGs, Yearly Goals, Daily Habits
Before you set a single goal for next year, answer this. What actually brought you joy this year, and what do you never want to do again? Not what you should do more of. What you want. Erica opens this episode by asking you to close the laptop, silence the phone, and drop the comparison to every other woman you know, because the plan only works if it is yours.
Then comes the structure, and it is three tiers. BHAGs come first, big hairy audacious goals, the ones that need more than 365 days. The MBA, the business, the savings account you are rebuilding. Next are the one-year goals, measurable things that genuinely fit inside twelve months, like reading a set number of books or running a marathon or getting to Egypt. Last are the habits, the daily and weekly actions that feed the tier above.
The habit tier is where most plans die, so Erica gives it the most attention. You break the goal down, then break it down again, then keep breaking it until the first step is so small it is nearly impossible not to do it. Two dollars in a jar instead of the Starbucks run, though let us be honest, at Starbucks it is more like seven. A specific number of miles this week instead of a marathon someday. One book at bedtime instead of more family time in the abstract.
The data on why the small version matters is brutal. Strava analyzed more than 800 million logged activities and found the point where most people abandon their New Year's resolutions is so predictable it has a name, Quitter's Day, and it lands on the second Friday in January. Resolutions do not usually fail in July. They fail in about ten days, because they were built at a size nobody could sustain.
So keep your goals as guideposts, not cement. Pace yourself, because going back for the MBA while starting a new job with a new baby is not a plan, it is a countdown. Progress over perfection, messy action right alongside it. And then Erica's one extra step, the one she added at the end: tell somebody. Share the goals, let her be your hype girl, and let the community be the thing that carries you past the second Friday in January.

Erica: Hey, girl. By now, you know I have Her Collective, my online community for ambitious women who are done doing it alone. Her Collective is for the women who are smart, capable, and driven, but they find themselves stuck on the sticky floors like self doubt, burnout, and waiting for permission that quite honestly never comes. Inside HER, you get more than motivation. You get real support, real strategies, and real momentum. We work on things like clarifying what you want now and what's coming next, building confidence without burning yourself out, navigating hard conversations, career moves, and leadership moments with clarity, and surrounding yourself with women who actually get it. This isn't about hustling harder. It's about moving intentionally with the right tools and the right people in your corner. If you're ready to stop spinning, start choosing yourself, and build a career in life that actually feels aligned, I'd love to welcome you inside her collective. You can learn more and join us at www.joinhercollective.com. Because honestly, girl, you were never meant to do this alone.
It is time to get fired up for 2023 and your 2023 goals and dreams. It is almost here. It is right around the corner. You are so ready for this. Today, I wanna spend some time really talking to you, giving you some introspective questions that are gonna guide you through creating the most intentional plan for your 2023. These questions will help you shape your New Year's resolutions, your goals, and the daily habits that you wanna take on this year.
Y'all know me, Erica Rooney. And today, I'm gonna walk you through getting your mind right and how to set fail proof goals. And my method will help you bust your glass ceiling, whatever that is for you. So let's start by taking a deep breath together. Let's clear our minds, let's set our focus, and let's move into 2023 with confidence. Confidence that we are spending our time on what matters most and letting go of the rest, letting go of the BS. Together, we're gonna break it all down and set intentional goals so that you could spend your time how you want to. Time is the only resource we can never get back. We can never make up.
So I want you to listen carefully. We are gonna do this a little differently than you've done it in the past. No more comparisons to other women. No more shoulds. You know, I should do this. I should do that. I should work her out every day. I should meal plan. We will only be focusing on what you want to be doing and those amazing things that will get you there. So go ahead, turn off all your other distractions. I want you to silence your phones, close your laptops unless you're using your laptop to work on your goals and dreams, of course, and clear your mind. This is your time to have complete focus on what you want your twenty twenty three to look like.
So for a high level overview, we have three pieces that we're gonna go through today. First, we're gonna start with that road map of 2023, then we're gonna work on breaking down the goals into specific measurable moments, and then we'll live it out.
So let's go ahead and get the road map going. First, we're gonna start by figuring out what matters to you. What brought you joy in 2022? What do you not wanna do anymore of? What do you wanna say goodbye to? What do you wanna leave behind in 2022? I also want you to think what excited you. What do you wanna see more of? What do you wanna cultivate more of? K. Start thinking through those questions. They'll help you build upon those goals for 2023. You can really start to hone in on where you wanna spend time this year when you ask those questions. Maybe you want to travel more and work less. Perhaps it's more outdoors time, maybe less time on the couch. It's really up to you.
When I asked myself these questions, family brought me joy, travel brought me joy, and so did hosting this podcast. What excited me was endless possibilities. Now y'all know I got a lot going on, and I love the progress that I've made on my twenty twenty two goals. So I wanna keep that focus going. I wanna do more reading, less social media. Oof. That is such a bad habit of mine. I wanna do more eating out at new restaurants. My husband and I tend to get stuck in the rut with the same old ones. I wanna do more family walks outside. So start to think about what you want to do more of and what you wanna say goodbye to.
Now let's talk about how we can break down the goals into specific measurable moments. This is the piece that is going to require the most intention and the most focus. I want you to be realistic. Remember, these goals are only guideposts. They are not stuck in cement. They can be modified at any time. Remember, goals grow when you go after progress, not perfection. If you struggle with this perfection piece of it, I encourage you to go back into one of my earlier podcasts. There are two really great episodes on perfection.
But I want you to approach 2023 as a work in progress. I don't wanna see any goals that are, I'm gonna work out three sixty five days a year, and I'm never gonna eat sugar. That's unrealistic and unattainable. I want you to focus on the big change. And with big change, I need you to understand that messy action is right alongside of that. Imperfect action, right alongside of it.
So we're gonna break our goals into three chunks. The first one I call BHAGS. You may have heard that term before. It stands for big, hairy, audacious goals, and these can be goals that take even more than the three hundred and sixty five days that we have to complete in 2023. Maybe you wanna go back to Sloan, get your MBA, launch your own business, work towards beefing up that savings account. Whatever that big goal is, if it is a longer timeline than three hundred and sixty five days, it's gonna jump in this bucket.
Then we're gonna have a second category of 2023 goals. So these can be BHags, but these are a shorter time span. They're gonna fit within the twenty twenty three year frame, the twelve months that we have. They are measurable, but they can be knocked out this year or 2023. It could be that you wanna read a certain number of books, run a marathon, or travel to Egypt. You get the picture.
And then from there, we're going to have our habits or the daily actions. And these are the steps that we have to take either daily or weekly to help us accomplish those 2023 goals and the BHAGS. This is where we take the BHAGs and the twenty twenty three goals, and we break them down. And then we break them down again, and then we break them down some more. And we break it down to their so tiny that the first step towards these goals makes it impossible not to do.
So if you guys wanna beef up your savings to a certain amount, it could be putting $2 in a jar that you'd normally spend on coffee at Starbucks. Okay. But let's be real. It's more like $7 if you're at Starbucks. Maybe it is your fitness goal to help you run a marathon. You can break down how many miles you need to be running and when. If a goal was more family time, maybe it's reading books to your small kids at the end of every day. Whatever it is, map it out. Think through what your goals are and how you can accomplish those goals by breaking them down into the bite sized chunks.
Last step, best step is living it out. Live on purpose. Watch your progress add up. No perfection required. Remember to pace yourselves. You don't wanna do all the things and make all the changes all the time. You need to be realistic on what you can accomplish and check off. For most people, it's not realistic to go back to school to get your MBA while having a new baby and joining board and taking a new job. That's too much. It might be realistic to choose one, maybe two of those things.
Day over day, week over week, month over month, you may not feel like you're making huge steps, and it's not going fast enough for you. But trust the process. Over time, consistency for showing up for those daily habits and those daily actions add up.
I am gonna add in one last step. Share your goals with me. Let me be your hype girl. When we have our community around us, we are more likely to hit those goals. So bookmark this episode, go back, listen to it again, and while you're working on mapping out those goals, just remember, you got this. 2023 is going to be an awesome and amazing year. Let's put in the work. Let's get those BHags on paper, and let's do this.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is a BHAG?
BHAG stands for big hairy audacious goal, and in Erica’s system it is any goal that needs longer than 365 days to reach. Going back for an MBA, launching a business, or rebuilding a savings account all live here. Separating these from your one-year goals stops you from judging a five-year goal by a twelve-month scoreboard.
How do you break a big goal into daily habits?
You break it down, then break it down again, and keep going until the first action is small enough that skipping it feels silly. Two dollars in a jar instead of a coffee, a set number of miles this week, one book at bedtime. The habit tier is what actually moves the one-year goals and the BHAGs above it.
Why do most New Year’s resolutions fail?
Because they are set at a size nobody can sustain, and the drop-off comes fast. Strava looked at more than 800 million logged activities and found motivation collapses so reliably in early January that the second Friday of the month is now called Quitter’s Day. Smaller daily actions and telling somebody your goals both help you outlast that date.

Hi, I'm Erica!
In the last 15 years, I climbed to Chief People Officer, 6x'd my income, walked away from a culture that stopped matching my values, wrote two books, and built HER Collective to help thousands of women rise to power and lead in the age of AI. I've learned a thing or two about smashing ceilings and closing gaps, and Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors is where I open the playbook, the receipts, and the real stories to share it all with you.
