The 4-Step Personal Brand Framework Behind My Own Following
If a stranger scrolled your LinkedIn right now, would they know what you stand for in ten seconds? I didn’t always know either. It took real trial and error, plenty of posts that weren’t authentic to me, before my own personal brand around women in corporate America clicked.
I built it in layers, starting with HR, narrowing into DEIB, narrowing again into gender equity, then again into being a working mom in the C-suite, until the niche was specific enough that it actually connected.
A personal brand isn’t a logo or a color palette. It’s the compounding trust you build by consistently sharing your real passions, your real audience, and your real story.
Data from a 2025 LinkedIn workplace report found professionals with active personal brands receive 47% more inbound opportunities than dormant profiles, and separate research shows 70% of employers now say a personal brand matters more than a resume. If you’ve been waiting for the “right,” polished version of yourself to start posting, the four-step framework in this episode (dig deep, know your audience, stay consistent, tell your story) is the permission to start messy today.

Erica: Because honestly, girl, you were never meant to do this alone. Listen up. In today's world, if you wanna climb the corporate ladder or really any ladder of success, you have got to stand out. This is why you have to have a personal brand that is on point. In today's world, where with the help of LinkedIn and all these other digital platforms, everyone can be connected and your personal brand is what is going to make all of the difference when it comes to you landing that next level job, earning a client's trust before they sign up with you and make you stand out.
Erica: So today, we're going to dive head first into the world of personal branding. If you think it's just a buzzword or that all you need is some fancy logo with some pretty colors that you like, you need to think again, friend, because personal branding is a game changer. So blow up your sleeves because in today's episode, you will learn all about how to show your authentic self, showcase your skills, and share what sets you apart from everyone else. Alright, friends.
Erica: If you are listening and thinking, I don't know what my personal brand is or how the heck am I gonna even figure out what it could be, have no fear. I'm gonna kick this off with my own top four tips to creating your personal brand. And we're gonna talk a little bit about me in this episode because what better way to talk about personal branding than to use my own personal brand? So the first thing you need to do is seriously dig deep. Dig very, very deep all the way to the bottom and think about what makes you tick.
Erica: What are you passionate about? Now here's the thing. It can be your work. If you're a human resource professional and you love HR, that's okay. What about HR do you love?
Erica: How can you make yourself stand out as a thought leader in the space of human resource? K? So for me, I do love HR. And when I dig deep, I love the DEIB, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging piece of HR. Even deeper, I love gender equality.
Erica: I know. I know. You wouldn't have guessed that. Right? But if you follow me in any of my posts, you see that I talk a lot about being a woman in corporate America.
Erica: If you go even further, I talk about being a working mom in corporate America. And even more niche, a working mom in corporate America that sits in the c suite. So everything about that, everything about me, that is what adds the value when I talk about my own experiences and my own quirks. So step one, dig deep. Step two is knowing your audience.
Erica: You have to understand who do you wanna connect with. How are you gonna tailor your message so that you are speaking directly to them? Are you trying to connect with others just like you? Post about your own struggles, your frustrations, your accomplishments, and your desires. That is how you connect.
Erica: K? Are you trying to connect with others in your industry? Right? Maybe you wanna be seen as a leader in the industry. Post about what's going on, cutting edge technology, or maybe where you see the space going in five years.
Erica: Maybe you're trying to connect with the recruiters or leaders at a certain company. Talk about whatever might interest them. The point here is, if you say your personal brand is for everyone, y'all, your personal brand will speak to no one. So make sure you know who you are speaking to. Now the third thing that you need to do when it comes to building your brand is consistency.
Erica: Consistency is queen, y'all. Whether it's a podcast, a blog, or a simple post once a week on social media of your choice, you have to do it consistently. Consistency builds trust. Period. Dot the end.
Erica: K? I've had a lot of women that I've worked with who've said social media is just not my jam. I'm really not that great on it. Then do a blog once a week. Okay?
Erica: It doesn't have to be what everyone else is doing, but you can build your own brand in a way that is authentic to you. And the last thing is to become a master storyteller. Why? Stories grab attention. Stories connect.
Erica: And guess what? People love stories. They remember stories. So share your journey, your ups, your downs, your successes, your failures, and share everything in between. Alright.
Erica: You've got the basic tip downs. Okay? You might be thinking, well, that sounds great and not so hard, but I still don't know how to create my own personal brand or figure out what that even means for me. And I get it. It took me a while to figure mine out, honestly.
Erica: And there were a lot of trial and error posts. There were a lot of things that I posted weren't super authentic to me. But guess what? A little trial and error is okay. It takes time to grow.
Erica: It takes time to get your rhythm down. And guess what? We're all evolving. But I do think that there are a few questions that you can answer that will help you really get to thinking about where you might want your personal brand to go. So grab a pen, grab a piece of paper, write these down, bookmark this, whatever you wanna do.
Erica: Number one, what is your passion? What lights you up, and why? Number two, what makes you unique? Maybe you're a single mom that climbed the corporate ladder or a woman who left a well paying job to open up a yoga boutique. I don't know.
Erica: But what is that story? Number three, how do you want others to remember you? Number four, what legacy do you want to leave behind? Number five, what values do you live by? And then the last one, what are your strengths?
Erica: When you kind of take all of those questions together, you can really form a very authentic and compelling personal brand. Seriously, write these questions down. I will post them in a blog and on LinkedIn as well so you could snag them there. But take a minute and answer them. See what themes come up for you.
Erica: What sticks out? And if you're still stuck, honestly, grab a friend and ask them what do you think are my top skills? What am I great at? What am I unique at? And I promise you, you'll get some great nuggets.
Erica: So let's get going. Start putting together some thoughts on paper and think about what you want to share and why. Now I'm gonna throw another tidbit in here for you, but find someone that you admire and follow all of their socials if you aren't already. What posts are they posting that you like? What could you emulate in your own socials for your own online presence?
Erica: Think about it. Alright. So I hope that you have the juices flowing, and I hope that some ideas are starting to generate. But before you click off this podcast and dive headfirst into the digital space, I do want to warn you about some of the mistakes that I have seen women make when kicking off their personal brand. Whatever you do, seriously whatever you do not fake it.
Erica: What is special about you is that it's you authenticity is your secret sauce you need to be real You need to be yourself, and don't bring any of the BS to the table. Ain't nobody got time for that. Next, you need to be smart about what you are doing online. You can create this chef's kiss personal brand without burning bridges at current and past companies. Make sure that you are being smart about what you are posting.
Erica: And finally, and this really brings us full circle, don't post and ghost. Be consistent. Reply to comments thoughtfully and be there for your people. You don't have to reply to everyone. But if you want to build a solid online presence and be known as a thought leader, some interaction is required.
Erica: So seriously, friends, personal branding is your golden ticket in a world that is still trying to catch up with your brilliance. It is your chance to break barriers, shatter ceilings, and show this world what you are made of. This personal brand you are building, it is your megaphone and it's time to turn the volume all the way up to a level 10. And that's it. That's a wrap.
Erica: I hope you're ready to take the plunge and craft your personal brand like a boss. Own it, love it, and let it lead you to your wildest dreams. Now get out there and do the damn thing already. And hey, do your girl a favor and follow my brand on all the socials. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, you name it.
Erica: I'm there and I would love, love, love to share that space with you. I'll see you next time.

Hi, I'm Erica!
In the last 15 years, I climbed to Chief People Officer, 6x'd my income, walked away from a culture that stopped matching my values, wrote two books, and built HER Collective to help thousands of women rise to power and lead in the age of AI. I've learned a thing or two about smashing ceilings and closing gaps, and Glass Ceilings & Sticky Floors is where I open the playbook, the receipts, and the real stories to share it all with you.
