How to Make Your Mind Work For You, Not Against You

Think about the last pair of shoes you really wanted. The limited edition sneaker, the red bottom heel. Now think about how fast you started seeing them everywhere, on the train, in the store, in a commercial. Those shoes were always there. Your brain just changed its mind about whether they mattered.

That is not magic and it is not manifestation. It is a filter in your brainstem called the reticular activating system, or RAS. Its entire job is to decide, in nanoseconds, which slice of the world gets into your conscious mind and which slice gets thrown out. Without it you would drown. With it, you only ever see what your brain has already decided is important.

Here is the number that should stop you. Neuroscientists estimate the brain takes in roughly 11 million bits of sensory information every second and that you consciously process somewhere around 50 of them. Your RAS is picking the 50. It is the reason you can sleep through traffic and wake instantly when someone whispers your name.

Now apply that to your career. If your brain has decided that you are the woman who always gets passed over, it will faithfully deliver evidence for that every single day and quietly bin everything that contradicts it. That is what a sticky floor actually is, one of those limiting beliefs like imposter syndrome, perfectionism, or the fear of judgment that keeps you stuck on the ground instead of busting through the glass ceiling. The filter is not broken. It is just following old instructions.

So in this episode I give you a small, almost silly exercise to prove to yourself that you can change the instructions. Start looking for angel numbers, those repeating sequences like 111 or 2222. Keep a tally. You will find more of them, not because the universe started printing them, but because you told your brain they matter. That is the whole proof of concept. You are not stuck with the thoughts you think. Feel them, then let the ones that do not serve you float away. Change your thoughts, change your actions, change your life.

Erica: Your mindset is critical to your happiness, success, the relationships you have in your life, and your fulfillment. And you have the power to reframe your mind.

Erica: So let me tell you about mindset and what I love about it. You can take simple steps to reprogram your mind, And by practicing them every day, you can retrain your mind to work for you, not against you. If you're struggling with feelings of frustration, negativity, and uncertainty, or maybe you just wanna level up your game this year, You have the power to create a positive mindset. But before we dive in, let's talk about the what. What is your mindset?

Erica: Your mindset is how you are viewing a situation either positively or negatively, and it is so important because it shapes how you view the world and what you feel about the present moment, your past, and your future. Seriously, though, your mindset determines what actions you take and also what actions you don't take. So much of your potential is either limited or expanded by your mindset, your sticky floors. And now if you follow my work, you know all about sticky floors. But if it's your first time here, sticky floors are those limiting beliefs like imposter syndrome, perfectionism, like the fear of failure or the fear of judgment that are blocking you from your potential.

Erica: They also show up in the form of toxic relationships and toxic behaviors. And the one thing that sticky floors and mindset have in common is that you have the power to change them. Now I love science. I have said that before, but I love it. It gives me evidence.

Erica: It gives me proof of concept. And if you're stuck in this negative place with your thoughts just spiraling, you'll wanna keep on listening because I'm gonna prove to you through science that you have control over your mindset and over those sticky floors. All human beings have a filter in their brain called the reticular activating system or RAS for short. And this system has one job, to determine in real time. We're talking, like, nanoseconds here.

Erica: What information should go into your conscious mind? What do you see in the world? What do you register? And what do we wanna filter out? Long story short, it makes sure that your brain doesn't have to deal with more information than it can handle, and it plays a big role in the information that we perceive daily.

Erica: It filters through roughly, like, 8,000,000 bits of information subconsciously that's flowing through your brain. Holy shiza. So what does this even mean? Well, I've got good news for you. It means that we can actually train our brains to bring in more of what we want and less of what we don't.

Erica: You're probably like, how's that even work, Erica? Well, let me start by asking you a question. Have you ever had your mind on a sweet pair of shoes? You know, that limited edition Nike or maybe a red bottom heel? You know what I mean.

Erica: And suddenly, you start seeing them everywhere. It seems like everyone has them. You see them at the store. You see them online. Even in TV commercials, they are popping up everywhere.

Erica: Y'all, that is your RAS at work. You see, those shoes were always there. They didn't just magically appear. People didn't just run out and start wearing them when they knew you were gonna be around. But your RAS has now deemed those shoes as important.

Erica: And now it's filtering them into your conscious brain. And as a result, you see them everywhere. This is the science I'm talking about at work. Think of it as the for you page on your social media. If you ever dream up or think even think about going to The Maldives, all of a sudden, your Instagram is filled with pictures of overwater bungalows and tropical drinks, you know, over the crystal blue water.

Erica: Maybe you start thinking about reorganizing your kitchen and all of a sudden you find yourself spiraling down the clean talk page in TikTok. Now anyone here who's on TikTok, y'all know what's up. But once again, that's your RAS at work. Those things were all over social media, and now you're seeing them. It's your RAS.

Erica: So the next question I wanna ask you is how can we make this system work for you? If it's there and it's filtering things in and out, how can we take control over it? And I've got an exercise for you that I want you to start doing today so that you can start to believe and see that this is science based, it is true, and it can change your life. I want you to start looking for angel numbers. Angel numbers are number sequences usually in three or four digits that contain repetition, like one one one or two two two two or a pattern like three two one or three four three four.

Erica: They appear in ordinary places, and they usually grab our attention if only for, like, a hot minute. But these numbers are believed to be messages from the spiritual universe that offer insight, wisdom, and directionality. And when you see these numbers, it's confirming that you're on the right path. It is believed to be the universe, the higher powers that be, whatever you believe in at work, sending you messages intentionally that you are moving towards something great. I want you to start looking for angel numbers.

Erica: See where they show up. Take note of them. Keep a tally. I bet. I bet because you're looking for them, you find more.

Erica: And you know why I think that? Yes. Because of RAS. Your brain now deems them important and your brain is going to start finding more of what you deem important. This is your mind working for you.

Erica: This proves to you that you can train your mind in real time. You can shift your mindset. Y'all we all struggle with sticky floors and negative mindset from time to time. We are after all a work in progress. But now you know the science, and you now know that you have the power and the ability to shift your mindset, which means you have the power to shift your life.

Erica: You are not stuck with the thoughts that you think. And I'm gonna say that again. You are not stuck with the thoughts you think. Feel them as they come and then let go of them if they don't serve you. You don't have to hold on to them with a death grip.

Erica: You can let them float away. You can let them go. You can change your thoughts. You can change your actions. You can change your life.

Erica: Thank you so much for listening. We have a mindset challenge going on right now now in the Now to Next Tribe Facebook group. If you are interested in joining, make sure you click the link in the show notes below, and I will see you there.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the reticular activating system and how does it affect your mindset?

The reticular activating system, or RAS, is a network of neurons in your brainstem that filters incoming sensory information and decides what reaches your conscious awareness. Researchers estimate your brain receives around 11 million bits of information every second and that you consciously process roughly 50 of them. Whatever your brain has flagged as important is what you will keep noticing, which means you can train it to bring in more of what you want.

How do you actually retrain your mindset?

Erica's exercise in this episode is to start looking for angel numbers, repeating sequences like 111 or 2222, and keep a tally of how often you see them. You will start finding more of them because you have told your brain they matter. That is real time proof that your filter follows your instructions, and the same mechanism works on evidence of your own competence.

What is a sticky floor?

A sticky floor is Erica Anderson Rooney's term for the limiting beliefs and toxic behaviors that keep women stuck on the ground instead of busting through the glass ceiling. Imposter syndrome, perfectionism, fear of failure, and fear of judgment are the most common ones. What sticky floors and mindset have in common is that you have the power to change both.
